| Content
is the adult industry term for the pictures, video, or erotic fiction
which make up the bulk of your site, and is what the surfer comes for.
As a newbie, content is one of the biggest problems you have to face. You need to decide if you are going to shell out money for licensed content straight away, or if you'll use free content. Licensed Content Aside from paying for production costs, the main expense in buying photos or video is the license to publish it. Indeed, it is what makes content so expensive. To get hold of licensed content, you need to use content providers. These are the people who take the photos and the video and sell it to you. The standard method of buying content is to visit a provider's site, check out their samples, and download the zip file, or else buy a CD online, which will be delivered to your door. Individual sets of photos can range in price from as little as $5 to $75. CD's are usually compilations and more expensive. Content providers also arrange for custom shoots, where you order exactly what kind of photos you need, however this can be very expensive. Recently a lot of content providers have been having "content blowouts" where they offer a lot of content for only a small amount of money. You need to be aware that often this is older content, but it is still good value. Below I've listed some useful content companies, and put the recommended ones in bold. |

Free Content This is the solution for the permanently poor webmaster. There are so many sponsors providing free content at present that one could successfully create a plethora of free sites without having to pay out a cent. Click here for a list of sponsors that provide free content. To obtain free content, you need to sign up with the appropriate sponsor, get hold of any passwords needed, and copy the photos onto your hard drive. You must always follow the sponsors instructions with regard to their content. Most will want the photos or thumbnails to link to their site, they may also require that any ads on that page be for them. You will also need to add a small line like "Photos courtesy of My Sponsor, Copyright 2000". Be aware that some link lists don't allow sites that use free content. The other problem is that because it's free, the content will not be unique to your site. Indeed, it may be spread across the entire web, and thus, a turn off to the seasoned surfer. Try and find the freshest, most obscure free content available. Making your own content The other option is to make your own. The most obvious and cheap version of this is to write your own erotic fiction. As mentioned on the Page Creation page, try and make them as steamy as possible, and make the protagonist in the mould of your targeted surfer e.g. if it's a women's site, write the story from the woman's point of view. Don't be bound by the limitations of the physical world - it's fiction, so let your imagination run wild! The other way of making your own content is with a digital camera. This modern equivalent of the Polaroid has let many a lusty amateur post pictures of themselves on the net for fun and profit. If you're of an exhibitionistic bent, drape the bed in clean white sheets, light some candles and create flattering mood lighting, and go for it. Surfers LOVE seeing pics of other real people; it's why amateur sites do so well. Alternately, if you can convince your wife/husband/neighbour/friend/vicar to get their gear off and pose for you, great. If they're nervous, try taking photos without any faces in them. That way they're anonymous, but still useful. DO NOT use pics or video of anyone without their consent. This is against the law, and will get you into a lot of trouble. You will also need to get a copy of their ID to ensure they are over 18 and comply with 18USC 2257 Quantity of content, and hardcore pics Don’t go overboard. 20 pics is fine. It’s the minimum required by most linklists these days, but any more than that and you’re making the surfer too happy. The idea is to get them aroused and then move them onto the paysite. You don’t want to get them off right there and then. The issue of hardcore pics follows in a similar vein. If you make the surfer too happy they’ll be finished before they get the credit card out. Tease them, and then tell them they can get real hardcore if they head over to the paysite. The other problem with hardcore is possible obscenity charges. In the current conservative climate, you don't want to give people an opportunity to prosecute. It's best to leave all hardcore behind an Adult Verification System if possible. If you're going to use hardcore pics on a free site, censor them first by blurring or blacking out all the "good bits". This means any "pink", any penetration and any erections. Yes, boring, but safe. Remember that under various obscenity laws, even a nipple can be considered obscene. By the way, that last paragraph is NOT legal advice. If you're concerned about possible obscenity laws, get a lawyer! |
