Do I have to know HTML? You will have to learn some extremely basic stuff, but to start off, a what-you-see-is-what-you-get program will do the job for you. As you go along you'll start to get the hang of HTML. How much will it cost to get started? Assuming you already have an ISP and FrontPage or other web creation software, you're looking at about $US50 to get started with your own hosted site, using purchased content. That breaks down to: $15 for a domain from directNIC, (or $8 from Godaddy) $15 to set up an account at somewhere like ProTGP, and $10-$20 in content. You'll also need to spend about $40 buying CuteFTP. If you don't have FrontPage, add a couple hundred dollars to your original total. You should also take into account the amount of time it takes to get started. This will not happen overnight. It may take a couple of weeks to get your first site up, depending on how much time you spend in front of the computer. Remember, you're not getting paid for that time until you see some signups. And even then, it's probably going to take at least a year for you to see some realy money coming in. How much money will I make? This all depends on how much traffic you get, how well your site promotes its sponsors, and how much your sponsors are paying you. In the beginning, don't expect much. You may not get any cheques for weeks. But when you do, it's a cool feeling, and it motivates you to do more. So don't give up if you're not getting sales... Work very, very hard, keep building, and submitting, and you'll get there eventually. How do I stop kids from looking at the site? You list the site with ICRA, the Internet Content Rating Association. You tell them how much smut is on the site, and they give you code which keeps kids away, as long as the right nanny software is installed on their computer. You can also visit official sites like Cyber Sitter and Net Nanny and list with them as well. What about Dreamweaver? When I started out, I had plenty of people telling me not to bother with FrontPage, but to use Dreamweaver instead. My advice is this: go with Uncle Bill Gates to begin with, because Dreamweaver is very difficult for an absolute newbie to learn. If you know how to use Word, you'll adapt to FrontPage very quickly. At this point you need to concentrate on building a useable site and marketing it, not learning complex design principles. Please note, I am not down on Dreamweaver. In fact, it's fabulous. But I'm very glad I went with the dumb option when I first started. You can upgrade later when you know more about what you're doing. Do I need any other pieces of software? Ideally you need some kind of graphics/image program to help you make banners, titles, and adjust photos. You should receive Microsoft Image Composer with FrontPage, and it's kind of useful. However if you own Adobe Photoshop, all the better. You may also want to invest in ThumbsPlus Got any more questions?
